Driving Evaluations (New Certification)

Regaining independence after a medical event often includes the question: “When can I drive again?” Specialized driving evaluations provide a structured, safe way to answer that.

What is a Driving Rehabilitation Professional (DRP)?

A DRP is certified through the Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists (ADED). With this certification, we can conduct both in-office clinical assessments and on-road driving tests to evaluate readiness and safety. We can also recommend adaptive equipment, such as special mirrors or hand controls, when needed.

Who Should Consider an Evaluation?

Individuals recovering from medical events that may impact driving such as strokes, traumatic brain injuries, or progressive conditions can benefit most. The best time for an evaluation is after functional recovery has reached a stable point, when someone is close to resuming driving.

The Process

A full evaluation usually takes about 90 minutes, including:

  • A clinical assessment (vision, cognition, physical ability)

  • An on-road driving test in real conditions

Insurance & Costs

Medicare does not cover these evaluations, and private insurance coverage varies. Workers’ compensation may apply in certain cases. For most individuals, this is an out-of-pocket expense.

DMV Considerations

While we are not required to notify the DMV when working with a client, we must report if someone is deemed unsafe to drive. To avoid the difficulties of relicensing, it’s often advisable to keep a license active (if safe to do so), even if not currently driving.

Specialized driving evaluations offer peace of mind for individuals and families helping ensure safety while supporting independence.
